WILHELM von WRIGHT's FISHES

The von Wright family originally came from Scotland. Wilhelm von Wright (1810-1887) was born in Finland, but came to Sweden as a young man and later became a Swedish citizen. His great work The Fishes of Scandinavia is from 1836—1857 and together with Swedish Birds it made him one of our most famous nature illustrators. The work has 63 plates, 59 ot which depict fishes in colour. Every plate had to be coloured by hand after an original painted by Wilhelm. The colourers were meticulous and could do at most three plates a day.
In 1855 Wilhelm von Wright become inspector of the Bohuslan fisheries, but was struck by a terminating illness just the next year.
The stamps were printed by combination print at Sweden Post Starti/is. Typography and engravings art by imys Sjob'blom. Lars Sjob'blom also designed the FDC, which feature a pike (Esox lucius), and the cancellation, a fish hook.
